Thank you!

Hello Oxfam Salt Lake volunteers!

We'd just like to send out a big THANK YOU to all of you for your hard work in organizing Saturday's event! Our Girl Risingfundraiser/screening was a major success and we really appreciate all of your hard work to make it happen! We had a great turnout and were pretty close to filling the theater thanks to your efforts!

The cost for the theater rental/screening fee was $850 (with $150 of that being donated directly to Girl Rising's non-profit) and after credit card/eventbrite fees we made $1,475.06 in donations/tickets sales.

So overall with this screening, we directly donated $625.06 to Oxfam America and $150 to Girl Rising's non-profit partners! Also, by showing such a great documentary, we were able to get the word out about some of the issues surrounding girls' education and poverty and provide a priceless educational experience to our audience.

Thank you again, and good work! We'll be in touch soon about upcoming events!

"This groundbreaking film, directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins, tells the stories of 9 extraordinary girls from 9 countries. Girl Rising showcases the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world."

Upcoming Oxfam meeting April 4th

Hello Oxfam organizers!

Come join us for our next meeting on Thursday, April 4th from 7:00-8:00pm at 65 W. Girard Ave. We have a couple of exciting new plans to discuss!

APRIL 4th AGENDA
1) The Salt Lake Downtown Farmer's Market is coming up and we need to schedule volunteers to staff the table for a few Saturdays this summer.

2) Also, we'd like to talk about hosting a screening of Girl Rising sometime in the next couple of months. It's a great new documentary about girl's education; check out the trailer if you haven't seen it yet! We've talked to the production company, and they said that they would love to have Oxfam use Girl Rising for one of our fundraisers. While there is a minimal charge for our use of the film, we are allowed to charge a ticket price to cover the screening cost and donate proceeds to Oxfam. At the meeting, I'd like to hear your thoughts about whether we should do the screening in a public theater, or on the U of U's campus, or both! The Society for Empowering Women Worldwide (a club on the U of U's campus) has said that they would be interested in sponsoring the screening.

3) We also need to make some assignments for getting sponsors for this fall's Hunger Banquet!

So mark your calendars for Thursday April 4th at 7pm; and bring a friend!

CHANGE Initiative - Apply now!

CHANGE is Oxfam America’s national student leadership program for rising sophomores and juniors. The year long program requires that accepted applicants attend a week-long training in the summer. CHANGE Leaders commit to join or form an Oxfam Club and implement an Oxfam campaign on campus during the 2013-14 academic year. Each year 50 students are selected from the US and around the world.

The 2013 CHANGE training will take place in Boston July 20-26, 2013. All selected students must commit to attending the entire training. Oxfam covers all costs associated with students attending the training; flights, food and lodging during the week in Boston. The leadership training program builds students’ leadership skills, advocacy skills, and familiarity with Oxfam’s mission—and introduces them to sophisticated and powerful models for social change. Founded in 2000, CHANGE has trained more than 680 student leaders from more than 300 colleges and universities. After the training, CHANGE Leaders return to campus energized and ready to work on social justice issues. Oxfam staffers and a CHANGE campus advisor provide guidance to the student activists throughout the year.

You can read more about the CHANGE program here: CHANGE Initiative

February 8th meeting notes

Thank you to all who attended our first meeting of Oxfam-Salt Lake! We had a great turn out and are really excited about all of the ideas that everyone contributed to our mission/fundraising this year. You have a lot of talent and passion and experience to bring to the mix and we welcome any feedback!
At our meeting, we discussed Oxfam's model for aid/development, looked at what kind of projects Oxfam is doing around the world and went over some ideas for ways we can raise awareness/fundraise here in Salt Lake.

Some of our ideas for upcoming fundraisers include:
 - Farmer's Market booth (a couple of Saturdays Aug-Oct)
 - 5K walk/run (summer)
 - Hunger Banquet (late fall)

We also discussed our upcoming International Women's Day Fundraiser on March 8th at Dolcetti Gelato! We decided to change the time (7pm-11pm) so that we can have more time to hear from more artists and watch short clips about Oxfam sponsored women around the world in between sets. It is going to be a lot of fun - so let's make sure we get the word out to friends/family to save the date! We will meet again on February 22nd from 6:30-8:30pm (same place - 65 W. Girard Ave SLC UT 84103) to get updates and finalize plans, but just a reminder- before our next meeting, we need to look for:

- Floral sponsors (any floral shops that would like to donate flowers to us so that we can give them out (for a small donation) at the women's day celebration at Dolcetti)
- More acoustic artists that would like to come play for about 20 minutes (and donate all/part of cd sales)
- Silk screening company (that would like to donate some screen printed Oxfam shirts for us to sell)

Just a note: although we cannot provide receipts for tax deductions, we will put a sign up at the event advertising our sponsors!
